Selling Digital Products with Gumroad: How to Start Without Setting Up Your Own Store?

Not everyone who wants to sell digital products needs to set up their own e-commerce site. Platforms like Gumroad make it easier to manage the sales page and payment process of digital products.

Products that can be sold may include e-books, design files, video tutorials, code snippets, software tools, study templates, PDF guides, music resources, photo packages and membership content.

The most important issue here is that the product actually solves a problem. “Preparing a 100-page PDF” alone does not create value. For example, a ready-made template that helps a certain professional group save time can be a much more meaningful product.

According to Gumroad's current pricing, sales made directly through the profile or the seller's own link 10% + 0.50 USD fee applies. Rate for sales with new customers via Gumroad Discover 30%. Additionally, direct sales may include additional fees such as credit card transaction fees.

Gumroad also notes that, effective January 1, 2025, it manages certain sales tax obligations through its Merchant of Record model. However, this does not mean that all tax liabilities in the seller's own country are automatically eliminated.

Initial cost: Since there is no fixed monthly fee on the platform, the initial cost may be low.

Revenue: Depends on product price and sales volume. For example, 50 sales of a $20 product would create $1,000 in gross sales; net amount will be lower after deducting platform and payment costs. This is just a mathematical example, not a revenue estimate or guarantee.

Time/workload: Preparing the first product, sales page, customer support, updates and marketing require time.

Risks: Copyright infringement, reselling someone else's product, using content produced with artificial intelligence but with an unknown license, and fake product/payment links.

Who is it not suitable for? May not be suitable for those who do not want to develop products, provide customer support and do sales/marketing.
