Your Home Wi-Fi Network Seems Secure, But Your Router May Pose a Risk
Your home Wi-Fi password may be strong. However, this does not mean that all security settings of your network are correct.
One of the points highlighted in TechRadar's review is the preservation of outdated wireless security protocols and the router management panel. This issue is especially important for people who use second-hand routers or who never check the settings of the device provided by their internet provider.
A router is not just a box that distributes internet. It is also a network component that manages home devices to communicate with the internet and each other.
Check these four things on your router
1. Wireless encryption
Check the security type in the router management panel. Use WPA3 if supported, or an appropriate WPA2 configuration if not possible. Avoid WEP and legacy WPA/TKIP configurations.
2. Administrator password
Wi-Fi password and router administrator password are different things. If the admin panel is still protected by a default or easily guessable password, change it.
3. Remote management
If you do not use internet access to router settings, consider turning it off. This way, you will not leave an unnecessary access point.
4. Firmware updates
Check if there is a software update for your model on the device manufacturer's official page. Do not download firmware from unknown sites.
Does hiding the SSID make you invisible?
No. Hiding the network name alone does not ensure the security of the network. Strong encryption, a secure administrator password, and up-to-date software are more basic defenses.
Also important is the security of smart plugs, cameras and other IoT devices. If these devices are not updated, they may pose additional risks to the home network.
Note for users in Türkiye: Router's management address, menu names and update options vary depending on the internet provider and device model.
