What happened?

According to Reuters news dated October 1, a hacker group thought to be linked to China sent emails to AI experts pretending to be a former US government official.

Campaign by Proofpoint Less than 10 people and targeted several institutions; They reportedly attempted to trick targets with AI collaboration offers and direct them to password-stealing sites.

The lesson here is pretty simple:

“This person looks like someone I know” is no longer a secure verification method.

AI can help fake email and social engineering attacks look more believable.
