Record Vocals Over Backing Without Going to the Studio: iPhone Voice Memos

He came up with a melody, but he doesn't have any recording equipment with him

You have prepared a musical infrastructure. You want to try out vocals on it, read lyrics, or record a short voice-over. Normally, you may need to deal with headphones, a microphone, and separate recording software.

Layered Recordings allows you to record a second vocal layer over an existing instrumental recording. The important aspect of the feature is that you can record vocals while listening to the background through the phone's speaker on the supported iPhone model. The system creates the vocal layer as a separate audio track. Apple

Step by step usage

1. Prepare the infrastructure record.

Open the Voice Memos app. Select the instrumental recording you saved previously. If you want, you can also start by importing a compatible audio file into your recording workflow.

2. Open the editing screen.

Tap the corresponding entry in the recording list and Edit Recording button. This will take you to the editing screen where you can see the audio waveform.

3. Initialize second layer.

Add a Vocal Layer button. Then record your vocal using the Record button.

4. Say it while listening to the infrastructure.

On a supported device, you can read your vocals while the instrumental recording plays through your phone speaker. The system helps separate the vocal track from the backing track with advanced audio processing and machine learning.

5. Adjust the audio balance of two layers.

Select layered recording. On the Edit Recording screen, open playback options and Layer Mix slider.

6. Convert layers to separate files.

If you want to edit in more detail, from the More menu Separate Layers. This way the layers are listed as separate records.

7. Check the project before exporting.

Listen to the recording from start to finish. If the vocal level, starting point and harmony with the background are not what you want, rearrange it.

Expected result

You can record vocals over a backing track on your phone, adjust the audio balance of the two layers, and separate the layers for later work in a professional audio editing program.

Apple also documents that layered recordings can be imported into Logic Pro on Mac. But that doesn't mean Voice Memos is a substitute for full-featured music production software. Apple

What should you do if it doesn't work?

  • Add a Vocal Layer does not appear, check your device model and iOS version.
  • If layered recording does not appear on an older device, check file format compatibility.
  • According to Apple's guidance, layered recordings are in QTA format and may not appear on iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, or macOS Sequoia 15.1 and earlier. Separating layers into separate files can help overcome this compatibility issue. Apple Support
  • If vocals are not separating properly, re-evaluate the recording environment and sound levels.

Privacy, security and data loss

  • Feature does not require additional purchase of third-party recording app.
  • Keep a copy of the original infrastructure before editing the layered record.
  • The ability to open the file on other devices depends on the software version used.
  • Apple's official announcement confirms that layers can be imported into professional audio software; However, this does not mean that every third-party application supports layers directly.
