If Your Windows Disk Is Filling Up Without Any Reason, Turn On This Feature: It Cleans Files By Its Own

Is the free space of the C: drive constantly decreasing even though you think you haven't downloaded anything on your computer?

Windows for Storage Sense.

This feature can free up disk space by automatically clearing unnecessary temporary files and the contents of the Recycle Bin under certain conditions. According to Microsoft's current documentation, the feature is available in Windows 11 and Windows 10.

How to turn on Storage Sense?

On Windows 11:

1. Start menu.

2. Settings.

3. System.

4. Storage section.

5. Storage Sense.

Microsoft's current menu path:

Start → Settings → System → Storage → Storage Sense.

When does it work?

The default behavior is that Windows can run Storage Sense when the computer is running low on free disk space.

However, you can change the operating frequency from the settings.

Which files can it clean?

Areas that Windows can automatically clean include:

• Temporary files

• Some files in Recycle Bin

• Unused system files

may be found.

But there is an important detail here.

Your Downloads folder is not automatically deleted

This is the point that many people fear.

According to Microsoft's current statement Downloads folder is not cleared by default.

Similarly, content from OneDrive or other cloud providers is not automatically managed unless you specifically set it.

Therefore:

“If I turn on Storage Sense, will the files I download be deleted?”

is in the default settings no.

How to free up more space?

In Windows 11 also:

Windows can also show you how much space you will save before deleting the files you select.

Windows.old file may also appear here

Legacy Windows installation if you recently upgraded Windows Windows.old folder.

According to Microsoft, the previous Windows installation can be removed from the cleanup options in Storage settings.

But before deleting it, make sure you don't need to revert to the old Windows version.

Does Storage Sense clean up all disks?

No.

According to Microsoft's current documentation, Storage Sense is essentially On the system drive where Windows is installed usually runs on C: drive.

To free up space on another disk:

Settings → System → Storage → Advanced storage settings → Storage used on other drives

My recommended usage

Safest start:

1. Turn on Storage Sensing.

2. Check the default settings that do not touch the Downloads folder.

3. See cleaning recommendations.

4. Check large files yourself.

5. Uninstall unnecessary applications.

6. Delete the old Windows installation only if you no longer want to go back.

This way, you can create a controlled automatic cleaning system instead of leaving Windows' storage space completely alone.
