Stockless E-Commerce with Print-on-Demand: Can You Establish a Brand Without Producing the Product?

In the print-on-demand model, t-shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, posters or similar products are not purchased in bulk in advance. The design is prepared, and when the customer places an order, the production and shipping process is carried out by the service provider.

Printful acknowledges that there is currently no mandatory initial or monthly fee to use the service; It states that when the order arrives, costs such as product, printing, shipping and, if necessary, taxes are incurred.

The advantage of this model is the reduction of stock risk. However, the word “stock-free” does not mean “cost-free”. Every order has production and shipping costs. Additionally, expenses such as store infrastructure, advertising, design tools, returns and customer support may arise.

It makes more sense to choose a specific micro-niche to start with rather than uploading hundreds of random designs. For example, a specific profession, hobby, sport or humor category can be targeted.

Initial cost: May be low. However, sample product order, design tools, store and marketing costs should be calculated separately.

Revenue: It should be evaluated as sales price − product cost − printing − shipping − platform/payment fees − advertising − tax and other expenses. There is no guarantee of profit until the sale is made.

Risks: Using copyrighted brands/logos, names of famous people, movie/game characters or designs belonging to others may cause serious problems.

For Turkey: If e-commerce activity turns into a regular commercial activity, tax and consumer legislation should be evaluated separately.

Who is it not suitable for? It may not be a good model for those who do not like producing designs, listing products, customer service and marketing.
