Organic Maps

Fee Status

Free and open source.

Organic Maps official project repository emphasizes an ad-free, tracker-free and data-collecting approach. It is also an independent project supported by donations. (github.com)

What Does It Do?

Can be used for map viewing, vehicle navigation, walking and cycling routes, place search, and offline navigation.

“You use Google Maps, but you want to use the map without the internet or try a more privacy-oriented alternative.

See Organic Maps.

What I like most about this application is that it can work offline.

You download the map in advance.

Then you can access the map even when your internet connection is weak.

There are walking routes.

There are bicycle routes.

There is car navigation.

There is a location search.

And open source.

Moreover, it adopts an ad-free and non-tracking-oriented usage approach.

Now, of course, it would not be right to say that it will replace Google Maps exactly for every user.

Because Google's ecosystem of business insights, live traffic data, and massive maps is so powerful.

But you're going on a trip…

You are going abroad…

Your internet package is limited…

That's when the offline map is a serious advantage.

It is especially useful for those who go hiking, cycling or traveling to have it on their phones.”

Advantages

It is free and open source. Offers offline map, walking/biking routes, car navigation and quick place search. He states that there is no advertising or tracking system. (github.com)

Disadvantages

Features like live traffic and Google Maps' vast business ecosystem may not be at the same scale.

Why Use?

Especially for those who want to use navigation when there is no or weak internet connection.

Better for Whom?

Travellers, campers, hikers, cyclists and privacy-conscious users.
