Learn the Private DNS Setting on Your Android Phone! Make Your Internet Connection More Secure

Android phones have a network setting that many people do not notice: Private DNS.

This setting can help protect the DNS queries that your phone uses to convert domain names into IP addresses for websites.

Normally, when you type a website name into the browser, your device consults the DNS service to find out which IP address this domain name corresponds to. Encrypting DNS queries makes it difficult for third parties on the network to read these queries directly.

Google's official documentation explains that the Private DNS feature in Android 9 and above can use DNS-over-TLS. Google also recommends Android users to keep Private DNS turned on. Google Help

What does Private DNS do?

The key benefits of Private DNS are:

  • Helps send DNS queries over an encrypted connection.
  • Reduces the risk of DNS queries being easily read on the network.
  • Allows you to select supported DNS providers.
  • Allows you to manage the phone's DNS usage behavior on different networks.

But there is an important distinction here: Private DNS is not the same as a VPN. It does not encrypt all your internet traffic and does not make your phone completely invisible on the internet by itself. Google also makes it clear that the feature only protects DNS queries and responses. Google Help

1. Find Private DNS on your Android phone

The location of the menus may vary depending on the Android version and phone manufacturer.

Try this way first:

  1. Settings application.
  2. Network and internet.
  3. Private DNS.

If you don't see the option, enter Private DNS.

The location of the network settings or the Turkish menu name may be different on some phones. If the option cannot be found, Google recommends searching in the settings or consulting the device manufacturer's help documentation. Google Help

2. Which setting should you choose?

On the Private DNS screen, you will typically see these options:

  • Off: Private DNS use is disabled.
  • Auto: The device uses the DNS settings provided by the network and can leverage private DNS connectivity where supported.
  • Private DNS provider hostname: Allows you to enter the address of a specific DNS provider.

Easiest starting point for most users Auto option. Google recommends that Private DNS on Android is used by default on supported networks and should be kept on. Google Help

3. If you want, you can use Google's DNS service

If you want to use a specific DNS provider, Google Public DNS is available for Android's Private DNS feature dns.google documents the hostname.

To set this:

  1. Settings section.
  2. Network and internet > Private DNS.
  3. Private DNS provider hostname.
  4. In the hostname field dns.google.
  5. Save.
  6. Check your connection over Wi-Fi and mobile data.

The names of the options in the menu may differ depending on the manufacturer. This installation method is based on Google's published documentation for Android 9 and above devices. Google for Developers

4. Does private DNS block ads completely?

No. The main purpose of Private DNS is to protect DNS queries.

A DNS provider may also offer advertising or malicious domain name filtering. However, this does not mean that all Private DNS services block ads. Google Public DNS dns.google address alone is not the same as installing a general-purpose ad blocker.

Additionally, DNS encryption does not mean that the content of every website you visit is protected by DNS. Other security mechanisms, such as HTTPS, serve separate roles.

5. If the internet is not working after changing the DNS setting

Some private DNS servers may be unreachable on certain networks, or a misspelled hostname may cause connection problems.

Try these:

  1. Turn on private DNS setting again.
  2. Check that the hostname is spelled correctly.
  3. If the problem persists Auto.
  4. Turn the Wi-Fi connection off and on.
  5. Restart the phone if necessary.

It is important to test the connection, especially if the login page is used in a hotel, cafe, airport or public Wi-Fi network.

Result: Private DNS is a small but significant network privacy setting in Android. Helps protect DNS queries when used with the right provider; however, it should not be considered a VPN, ad blocker, or a complete security solution.
