Manually Duplicating the Same 3D Part Hundreds of Times: Blender Geometry Nodes Repeat Zone

Are you building a staircase or repeating pieces one by one?

You are creating a staircase, set of steps, decorative column, or repeating 3D structure. Instead of duplicating each piece separately, you can set up a node system that repeats a single piece a certain number of times and moves it to a new location at each step.

Blender's Repeat Zone feature runs a group of nodes the number of times you specify. You can update the geometry state at each iteration and pass the result to the next iteration. docs.blender.org

Step by step: Create parametric staircase

1. Create the startup object.

Create a cube in Blender. Think of the cube as a single step. Select the object, add Geometry Nodes modifier and create a new node tree with the New button.

2. Add Repeat Zone.

In the Geometry Nodes editor Shift+A. Search for Repeat Zone in the search area and create the node region.

3. Define the geometry state to repeat.

Use the Repeat Zone's standard Geometry input as the current digit. Also to store all accumulated digits All Geometry.

This distinction is important: One entry will represent the rung currently being moved, and the other will represent the entire staircase accumulated so far.

4. Connect the first geometry to two inputs.

Connect the starting cube to both the Repeat Zone's existing geometry input and the All Geometry input. Thus, the first step is initially both the part to be moved and the accumulated geometry.

5. Add Transform Geometry node.

Create a Transform Geometry node inside the Repeat Zone. Connect your input to the existing step geometry.

Translation values on the X axis for example 0.3 in Z axis 0.2. So each repetition will move the digit forward and up.

6. Collect the stairs with Join Geometry.

Add a Join Geometry node. Connect the Repeat Zone's All Geometry value to one input and the Transform Geometry output to the other.

Wire the Join Geometry result to the Repeat Zone's All Geometry output. Also connect the Transform Geometry output to the standard Geometry output. So the next iteration takes over both the new rung and the accumulated ladder.

7. Set number of repetitions.

Iterations to 12, for example. Connect the All Geometry output on the Repeat Output side to Group Output.

You can now control the number of steps of the ladder by changing the number of repetitions.

Expected result

From a single starting cube, you get a node system that automatically creates the number of steps you specify. You can adjust the spacing and height of the steps by changing the X and Z values.

What should you do if it doesn't work?

  • If nothing appears, check that Repeat Output connects All Geometry output to Group Output.
  • If only one digit appears, examine the Join Geometry connections.
  • If all the digits overlap in the same place, check the Translation values in Transform Geometry.
  • If the scene gets too heavy, reduce the number of Iterations and make sure you don't multiply the geometry unnecessarily.

Security, privacy and data loss

Blender is a free and open source 3D production software. Since Repeat Zone can create a large number of geometries, it can increase memory usage. Save the important project and create a copy before modifying complex node networks. Node-based production doesn't mean the model is always ready to print or export; further verify geometry.
