Separate Your Work and Personal Life in Chrome! Easy Way to Create a Separate Profile
If you use both your work and personal Google accounts on the same computer, you may have to constantly switch accounts in the browser.
Your work email may be open in one tab, your personal account in another, and your client's account in another tab. It's easy to send an email from the wrong account or log into a service with the wrong account.
Google Chrome's profile feature can reduce this confusion.
Chrome profiles; It helps keep bookmarks, history, passwords, and other browser settings separate from each other. This way, you can create different browser environments for your business and personal use. Google Help
What exactly is a Chrome profile?
Chrome profile allows you to keep information about your browser usage in a separate environment.
For example, you can create two different profiles:
- Job profile: Work emails, customers, work bookmarks, and services you use with a work account.
- Personal profile: Your personal emails, daily browsing and private bookmarks.
Each profile has its own browser settings. If you want, you can more easily recognize which environment you are in by using different colors and profile pictures. Google Help
1. Create a new Chrome profile
Follow these steps on your computer:
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the profile icon in the upper right corner.
- Add Chrome profile or similarly named option.
- Specify a name for the new profile.
- Choose profile picture and color if you want.
- Sign in with the Google account you want to use within the profile, or continue without signing in with your account.
The wording in the menu may vary depending on the Chrome version and interface language. If you sign in with your Google account and enable sync, your supported browser information can sync with your other devices through your account. Google Help
2. Switch between work and personal profiles
Once you create the new profile, switching is pretty easy.
- Click the profile icon in the upper right corner of Chrome.
- Select the profile you want to use.
- Wait for the new profile window to open.
- Check that you are signed in with the correct Google account.
For example, you can use your work profile during business hours and your other profile during personal use.
This distinction reduces the possibility of trading from the wrong account. However, when switching between accounts, still check which profile the window belongs to.
3. Distinguish profiles with different colors
If you have more than one profile, it can be easy to get them mixed up.
To reduce this, assign different names and colors to profiles.
For example:
- Work: Navy Blue
- Custom: Green
- Content created by Purple
Although this is just a visual tweak, it is very useful when you have many Chrome windows open at the same time.
You can find profile editing options in the profile management section of the Chrome profile menu. Google Help
4. Chrome profile is not the same as incognito mode
This distinction is important.
Chrome profile is used to create different browser environments. History, bookmarks and other information of the profile can be kept within itself.
Stealth mode limits certain browsing session data from being stored in the normal browser history.
Using incognito mode does not make you completely invisible on the internet. Likewise, creating a separate Chrome profile does not create a strong firewall against other profiles or the same level of access limits as computer user accounts.
Google states that if you share your computer, you should only share it with people you trust and that another person can access your Chrome profile and see some of your browser information. Google Help
5. Be careful when deleting a profile
You can remove a profile that you no longer use. However, you should be careful during this process.
According to Google's documentation, removing a profile from Chrome may delete local bookmarks, history, passwords, and other settings for that profile from the computer. Google Help
Before deleting:
- Make sure you select the correct profile.
- Check that the necessary bookmarks and other information are stored.
- If you have important information that you keep locally in the profile, consider the need for backup.
- Only after that delete the profile.
Result: Organizing Chrome with separate profiles for work and personal use is a practical way to reduce account clutter. However, do not substitute profiles for secure user accounts and do not leave sensitive information open on public computers.
